The Oceanic Newsletter
By Jim Stavis

Even though two thirds of the surface of the planet is underwater, we tend to focus on the one third that is above sea level. Yet we have always had a fascination with the ocean and what lies beneath it. This newsletter is dedicated to the ocean. Our first article features a company named Semisub that recently began buying steel from Paragon Steel. The company was formed in 2003 to bring the beauty and mystery of the ocean to the tourism industry. Our second article has less to do with the steel industry, and more to do with patriotism and how the U.S. Navy could turn steel salvaged from the September 11th wreckage into a floating memorial.

SEMISUB

Semisub designs, builds and operates a fleet of semi-submersible vessels located at tourist hot spots worldwide. Indeed, these vessels are long way off from the submarine ride located at Disneyland—but the concept is somewhat the same. These submersible vessels have the capacity to accommodate 150 passengers who can pack into the bottom of the ship to view actual sea life in its natural habitat. Or they can relax in the upper two surface decks that feature a full bar, lounge and dining area. The original Semisub prototype has been in operation in Maui, Hawaii, for more than nine years. It was developed by Curtiss Jackson, founder and CEO, who is proud to claim Semisub as the first semi-submersible vessel approved by the U.S. Coast Guard. There are currently 18 future locations under contract, with six more pending. The company is seeking investors, so if interested, visit their Web site: www.semisub.com

A TRIBUTE TO 9/11

A year after the 9/11 tragedy, in September of 2002 in a ceremony in New York, it was announced that a transport dock ship of the U.S. Navy would honor the 9/11 victims. The new ship would be called the USS New York, with the slogan of the ship “never forget” adorned on its hull. It would carry 360 sailors and be built in the Avondale shipyard in Louisiana. There are two unique features of this ship, which separate it from other transport ships of its kind. First of all, steel salvaged from the World Trade Center wreckage was utilized in its construction. The shipyard and Navy inspected the steel and found it to be of sufficient material strength so that it could be incorporated into the bow stem. Secondly, there were two masts shaped in size to the World Trade Towers that are symbolic of 9/11. The ship was christened to sail on March 1st and its mission is to defend freedom and combat terrorism around the globe.

AN OCEAN QUOTE

1“I don’t see America as a mainland, but as a sea, a big ocean. Sometimes a storm arises, a formidable current develops, and it seems it will engulf everything. Wait a moment, another current will appear and bring the first one to naught.”

—Jacques Maritain French Philosopher, 1948
